This is an entry-level qualification that recognises the key competencies required of security personnel who are able to work in a variety of security contexts. This qualification is geared towards individuals who want to enter the security industry. The course will assist with the development of competencies in standard security practices such as access and egress control, security response and patrols, asset protection and visible security operations.
Learners gain insights within a range of contexts, including rural, urban, corporate, mass, gatherings, homes and businesses.

This qualification is the first in a learning pathway for the security sector. After completion of this qualification, learners will be able to enter various security disciplines such as electronic security or close protection security. Once learners have completed this qualification, they will be able to access higher qualifications within the learning pathway, and will be able to choose from specialised fields such as dog handling, assets in transit operations, firearm specialisations. There is a need within the security sector to develop people at the operational level in the security environment. This qualification identifies a workplace-based needs within the safety in sector for both employers and employees, both for current and future purposes.
It provides the learner with the competencies that will enable them to be employed within the sector specifically in a security environment and provides the learner with the flexibility to pursue different careers within this environment. Through the choice of appropriate elective unit standards, the learner can gain knowledge and competencies required in the law enforcement environment.
NQF4 is the equivalent of a grade 12 / Matric certificate. This is a stepping stone to NQF5, which is a diploma level course.
This qualification has been designed for people working in the security environment at operational levels who endeavour to perform more than elementary security functions. Learners will be able to specialise in certain security aspects or have an option to move into supervisory aspects within this industry. This qualification allow for individuals to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to operate professionally within the security sector. It will also open up further career paths for people within the security industry and will provide possible advance career opportunities. This qualification will assist in improving relationships between employers and employees in the sector, as the qualification will help to attract and retain quality learners and employees. The qualification will enhance the status, productivity and employability of the learner within the industry, particularly within the security environment, as well as contribute to the quality and growth of the safety in society environment. Through the elective component of the qualification learners are able to demonstrate specific vocational skills. This qualification will also encourage continuous transformation within the security environment, by allowing learners access to a qualification within the industry.
This learning programme is based on SAQA’s qualification in generic management and includes the prescribed 12 security management-related unit standards that allows for specialisation in the management of security.
A person acquiring this qualification will be able to manage first line managers in an organisational entity.
