General Security Practices
This is an entry-level qualification that recognises the key competencies required of security personnel who are able to work in a variety of security contexts. This qualification is geared towards individuals who want to enter the security industry. The course will assist with the development of competencies in standard security practices such as access and egress control, security response and patrols, asset protection and visible security operations.
Learners gain insights within a range of contexts, including rural, urban, corporate, mass, gatherings, homes and businesses.
Learners will be equipped with the competencies needed to undertake a range of security related processes and practices at an entry level. This qualification focuses on the security environment allowing providing learners with the opportunity to practice the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to operate in a professional manner. The qualification will also enhance their career opportunities within the security environment.
The successful learner will be able to:
- Safeguard premises, assets, information and personnel
- Interact with customers and people
- Operate security equipment
- Conduct security duties within the ambit of the law
NQF3 is the equivalent of having completed grade 11, and a stepping stone to NQF4, which is the equivalent of the a grade 12 / Matric certificate. Some of the courses here include but are not limited to:
- How to identify, handle and defuse security related conflict
- How to manage reactions arising from a traumatic event
- How to handle complaints and problems
- How to conduct access and egress control
- How to coach a team member in order to enhance individual performance in work environment
This qualification falls within the field of safety in society. To have an entry level qualification in the area of security is vital to deter and detect criminal activities that in turn supports government initiatives in this regard. The competencies in this qualification will contribute to a safer environment that is needed for economic development, financial investment and the development of business opportunities. Learners entering the field of security will be empowered by this qualification as it provides the elementary competencies needed in the security sector such as access and egress control, conducting patrols and observation techniques.
This qualification is the first in a learning pathway for the security sector. After completion of this qualification, learners will be able to enter various security disciplines such as electronic security or close protection security. Once learners have completed this qualification, they will be able to access higher qualifications within the learning pathway, and will be able to choose from specialised fields such as dog handling, assets in transit operations, firearm specialisations. Specialist Security Practices
There is a need within the security sector to develop people at the operational level in the security environment. This qualification identifies a workplace-based needs within the safety in sector for both employers and employees, both for current and future purposes.
It provides the learner with the competencies that will enable them to be employed within the sector specifically in a security environment and provides the learner with the flexibility to pursue different careers within this environment. Through the choice of appropriate elective unit standards, the learner can gain knowledge and competencies required in the law enforcement environment.
NQF4 is the equivalent of a grade 12 / Matric certificate. This is a stepping stone to NQF5, which is a diploma level course.
This qualification has been designed for people working in the security environment at operational levels who endeavour to perform more than elementary security functions. Learners will be able to specialise in certain security aspects or have an option to move into supervisory aspects within this industry. This qualification allow for individuals to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to operate professionally within the security sector. It will also open up further career paths for people within the security industry and will provide possible advance career opportunities. Learners have the opportunity to enhance the development and management of policies and procedures. SAQA ID 57713, NQF level 4.
The successful learner will be able to:
- Provide security services to clients
- Explain and apply current legislative requirements to own area of responsibility
- Contribute to a safe and secure environment
- Communicate with internal and external clients
This qualification will assist in improving relationships between employers and employees in the sector, as the qualification will help to attract and retain quality learners and employees. The qualification will enhance the status, productivity and employability of the learner within the industry, particularly within the security environment, as well as contribute to the quality and growth of the safety in society environment. It allows for access, progression, portability and mobility within the security environment. Through the elective component of the qualification learners are able to demonstrate specific vocational skills. This qualification will also encourage continuous transformation within the security environment, by allowing learners access to a qualification within the industry.
Security Management
This learning programme is based on SAQA’s qualification in generic management and includes the prescribed 12 security management-related unit standards that allows for specialisation in the management of security.
A person acquiring this qualification will be able to manage first line managers in an organisational entity. First line managers may include team leaders, supervisors, junior managers, section heads and foremen. The focus of this qualification is to enable learners to develop competence in a range of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values including:
- Initiating, developing, implementing and evaluating operational strategies, projects and action plans, and where appropriate, recommending change within teams and/or the unit so as to improve the effectiveness of the unit.
- Monitoring and measuring performance and applying continuous or innovative improvement interventions in the unit in order to attain its desired outcomes, including customer satisfaction, and thereby contributing towards the achievement of the objectives and vision of the entity.
- Leading a team of first line managers, by capitalising on the talents of team members and promoting synergistic interaction between individuals and teams, to enhance individual, team and unit effectiveness in order to achieve the goals of the entity.
- Building relationships using communication processes both vertically and horizontally within the unit, with superiors and with stakeholders across the value chain to ensure the achievement of intended outcomes.
- Applying the principles of risk, financial and knowledge management and business ethics within internal and external regulatory frameworks in order to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the unit.
- Enhancing the development of teams and team members through facilitating the acquisition of skills, coaching, providing career direction, and capitalising on diversity in the unit.
The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this qualification are essential for the creation of a talent pool of experienced and effective middle managers that represents the demographics of the South African society. This qualification will create a leadership cadre for the South African society throughout multiple industries and sectors both private and public. SAQA ID 74511, NQF level 5.
